Assignment 3 - Mary Hanna

This past summer, I went on a mission trip to Haiti. I was expecting it to be bad, but when I arrived, I saw how bad the poverty really was. On TV, you are given an image of everything, but once you are there to see it in the flesh, it is insane. I quickly became more conscience of my water usage and how much food I took. Everyday I woke up to the sound on roosters at 5am and had to bush my teeth with bottled water. I spent the day with kids who wanted to braid my hair and sing songs. I became of aware of the people and environment around me. When we were stuck on a road due to protests, our leader managed to drag us to his house where we stayed for 8 hours in the hot sun. Yet, the people showed great hospitality and comfort in times of such discomfort. The people I met there were not sad poor citizens of a third world country, they were loving, warm individuals who were so grateful for my and each others presence. That gratefulness is a gift I received from my trip to Haiti and is something I will never forget or lose.
