In general, in large crowds or with people I don't know too well, I tend to be a little reserved. I try not to be too loud or too polarizing. However, when someone will exhibit a certain trait, ex. a common interest, I will jump on that immediately as something to expand upon. I usually use their response to that jump go gauge whether or not I should continue to push that friendship in the same way or to fall back a little bit.
When presenting myself to strangers, specifically ones that I know I won't see again, I try to be polite. I feel like most people would say that, but that's how I was raised: pleases and thank yous, firm handshakes, smiles. If some one is very rude right off the bat (which almost never happens), while I occasionally gather the wit to think of something clever to say back, I never really have the guts to say it.
