Bhoomi Shah -Assignment 14
Turkey day doesn't exist in my house. It's buried with my father's dream of ever becoming a professional singer. However, my family does celebrate a truckload of other holidays, most usually Indian holidays. The most frequent one is Devali. Devali is known as the festival of lights and celebrates the Indian new year (early November usually). This holiday is a very boisterous event in India, however, since moving to America my parents don't go as all out as they had used to. Instead, we decorate the house with lights, similar to those found during Christmas. We also make sand art on our front porch representing various Hindu gods and sayings. The real fun happens, however, at the functions our local temple hosts every year. There we dance in a circle known as garba to music performed either by a live band or DJ. My favorite part is the food, of course. At these events, you find mountains and mountains of Indian savory foods and sweets. The events last till midnight and provide a great opportunity to catch up with friends and get in the Devali spirit.
