1. "And I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston fits perfectly into this playlist. The combination of the longing voice and the heart rending chords make this song a great way to express your emotions when you have to say goodbye. It's a classic and thus it is placed in the number one spot. It is meant to address the sorrow that loss brings.
2. "Hurt" by Johnny Cash takes the second spot on this list. I chose this song because I enjoy Johnny Cash. Furthermore I find that it represents the pain that someone might feel when they lose a loved one, move away from their best friend, or have a heated argument with someone close to them.
3. "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd is another intensely melancholic and depressing song. It is the longing that one feels for those people, or experiences, back. It's a longing for the return of what has been lost. I feel the longing is an important part of losing someone or something. It means that you cared. And it is important to show that you care.
4. "Over the Rainbow" by Harold Arlen is just a sad song. Even though it's about hope of a better place, it invokes that tears that are healthy in grieving. It also is representative of the hope that maybe one day you won't feel this chasm of heartbreak.
5. "The Circle of Life" from the Lion King is placed at the end to help you remember that everything is cyclical. It will come and go, but nothing is permanent. No matter how enjoyable it is, how much you love it, and how much you struggle to keep it, it will always leave. And you have to accept that. This is song is about acceptance of your loss and moving on. At least for the purposes of this play list.
