TV has always been a sense of escape from me. Many times we become so engrossed with daily struggles and fears that we essentially lose the ability to smile or laugh at ourselves. At least that's is what happens to me. I tend to take everything too seriously to the point that many times my parents have to remind me to stop studying. A distraction in these instances is duly needed, and sometimes the best distraction is a TV show that in cases everything we love about life. TV, in this instance, is an extension of ourselves. We normally watch TV when we are bored. The shows we chose to watch, however sporadic they may seem, represent a part of ourselves in some way or another. We watch shows such as comedies in order to lighten the mood during a tense period in our lives. We tend to lose grasp of reality when watching these shows and some ways we get to live out a character that we know can never really be us. For this reason, I love to watch shows like the Office, not only for its witty humor but also because of its display of family and commitment that is hard to recreate so perfectly in everyday society. However, we sometimes become too reliant on TV to fill that empty void in our lives and we forget our real-world responsibilities. TV essentially then becomes a drug that we are addicted to and can't quit.
It is due to this that I believe parents have a right to regulate how much TV their kids consume. There should be a limit. As humans, our sense of self-control is at many times very scarce. Binge watching is easy to succumb to but difficult to come out of. The more we lose track of reality the more we forget who we are. TV should represent what you love, it should not replace it.
