Assignment 6 - Oliver Fister

One of the most interesting fields of things I've learned in high school is the variety of English and writing classes I've taken and what they've taught me about writing - AP Seminar and AP Language in particular. Both have given me good insight onto how to write effectively from two very different perspectives.

AP Seminar was fantastic at teaching the technicality of writing. How long it needs to be, what information to include, proper formatting, etc. It definitely addressed how to write formally and informatively, mostly for school. While the projects were difficult and forced me to work with people with clashing work ethics and ideas, the class was enjoyable and taught me much.

AP Lang is currently introducing newer perspectives (especially through Writing With Style) that I am accepting with more open arms. Unlike AP Seminar, the things I've learned are more loose, and allow writing to be something to be done with fun. It introduces the notion that writing is something to enjoy doing and to be enjoyed by others once they receive the finished product, a notion perhaps considered absurd by many other English teachers. Things like the "no-no words" especially help me clean up my style, and the constant attacks on formatting "rules" allow things like one-word sentences (and even paragraphs) much more approachable and even appealing to use. All of these things, even the things I learned in AP Seminar, are fun to learn for someone who occasionally writes for personal enjoyment, and are inspiring me to do it more and more.
