In my opinion, TV is just another form of media. Just like with a book or live theater, the content you receive can range from profound and thought provoking to an incredible waste of time. In many ways, it is an excellent way to convey information in a more time efficient manner, while also not usually requiring the audience to invest weighty mental commitment one must give to a book. However, it is also for this reason that I personally don't watch a lot of TV. Similar to the difference between a comic and a novel, its far easier to binge watch a sitcom like The Office with basic thematic elements and a reliable plot than it is to watch something heavier like Sherlock. Both are excellent shows that I have enjoyed immensely, but it is far too easy to lose track of the sheer amount of time you can spend just passively receiving information that doesn't contribute to anything outside of the show. That being said, there is nothing wrong with being entertained thoughtless for a little while, but everything in moderation.
