Assignment 23 - Kelden Andrews

Playlist for melancholy on the back porch (preferably at night)

Artist, Name, Album

1. New Model Army, Ballad, Ghost of Cain

If you've never heard it its a sad and poignant song about kicking the can down the road, my grandfather affectionately refers to it as, the Boomer's Ballad. Just makes you think about unhealthy tendencies for the future, procrastination and stuff, and what to do instead

2. Saint PHNX, Magic, Magic

Song about reflecting on the past self, particularly youth. It's actually a fairly happy song but the relatively down played and bassy tones make it seem more melancholic, perfect for reflecting on how far you've come over the week, or the month, or the year. Although this ones a bit louder than Ballad so maybe turn down the volume a bit to not interrupt those serene vibes.

3.  Ghost of Paul Revere, After Many Miles, Believe

A relatively mellow song about love in a general sense. Really calm and relaxed but still impactful. In all honesty I only really like it because the drums and slow clapping are a great combo.

4. Barns Courtney, Goodbye John Smith, N/A

A very sad song, like think Johnny Cash's Hurt cover for comparison. It's almost a universal Euology which can almost be seen in the title. I like it because it seems to have the same message of Dylan Thomas's famous "Do not go easy into that good night" poem but hasn't been subverted by young adult novels and other unsavory groups.

5. MGMT, When you die, Little Dark Age

This is the opposite of magic in that it's actually a sorta happy song, albeit about death, in a downbeat fashion, chill and deep perfect for the quiet contemplation of the back deck at night. Also if you've never seen the music video for the song, watch it, seriously its an experience all it's own

6. Alec Benjamin, Outrunning Karma, Narrated for you

Weird electrical slow sad song? I don't really know why I like it but it has a slow beat and a down trodden attitude perfect for melancholy on the back porch.

7. Lord Huron, Ends of the Earth, Lonesome Dreams

A positive chill song to end with, nice and relaxing with a nice positive message about exploration and dreams
