I was born in Kentucky and all of my immediate or extended family have been born in Kentucky or rural areas of other states. Naturally this type of situation encourages some of my family to adopt conservative social and political views. Thankfully, while I was born in and grew up in Kentucky, it was in Lexington where I was exposed to many differing viewpoints and ideas.
This lead to me developing some widely different views on many topics than my extended family. We have sometimes engaged in lighthearted debates about our views.
Overall the outcome of these differing views has been that my ability to think independently and develop my own opinions has grown and I have grown more confident in my views.
