People are inherently afraid of death. A fear of heights or suffocation is only natural because these are precursors to death. Yet a fear of failure, that is a fear that is produced through a highly competitive society. It is produced through a focus on success and nothing else. We evaluate someone based on their successes, and their successes only. Thus, if we fail we are sure to be seen as less valuable and nobody wants to be seen as less valuable. Furthermore I fear that all the work I have put in and all the time I have put in will have become useless if I fail. Perhaps that is why I waste time on meaningless things. Because if I focus all of my attention on something and fail, it would hurt more than putting in little effort and failing.
Competition is especially vigorous during eleventh and twelfth grade. Students are applying to colleges and only the best and brightest will be selected for the top schools. One of my biggest fears is that all the work I have put in, all the extracurriculars, all the time spent studying will be for naught. I understand this fear is irrational. If I don't get into college my senior year I can always take a gap year and study abroad, or volunteer, or get a job. No matter what happens, even if I fail, there will always be something after. But thats the thing about fears, they're irrational, and no matter how much logic I present to combat it, it still remains.
