This writing prompt asks me what topic interests me so much to the point that I lose track of time, and get transported to a state of Zen. Coincidentally, this idea of “Zen” captivates my interest along with other Japanese concepts. Being born to a Japanese mother, I have always identified with the Japanese side of me. As a result, I find Japanese culture and religion to be absolutely captivating. For example, lately I have been delving into the teachings of Japanese Buddhism, whether it be of the Nichiren School or the Zen teachings. Perhaps this is a result of my lack of willingness to try in school and the need for a plan B; being that I go to a Buddhist temple in Japan and live out my days as a carefree monk. However, I also find interest in Japanese topics that aren’t so Japanese. Japanese imperialism, for example. Japan became an imperialist power after about 200 years of being a hermit as a result of trade with outside forces such as Portugal, the Dutch, and the United States.
